An engagement ring is daily-wear metal, a diamond (or gem), and a set of promises: delivery, returns, manufacturing quality. Not a romance script.
Buy in order. Budget. Shape. Diamond quality. Metal. Size. Then ready-to-ship or made-to-order. Keep two proofs separate: London hallmarking for the metal, and IGI/GIA for the stone when the product is sold as certified.

The order that stops expensive mistakes
- Budget ceiling. Write the number you will not exceed. Include resize buffer and travel if the proposal is away. Kill “three months’ salary.”

Certificate and hallmark — two checks
Before you fall for a photo:
- Stone: report number when certified, shape, carat, colour, clarity, cut or proportions, origin line.
- Mount: precious metal standard and London hallmarking. A hallmark does not grade the diamond — London hallmarks.
Either side vague? Pause. We expect these questions.
Budget without the salary myth
No universal correct spend. Only a ceiling you can defend after rent, savings, and the rest of a shared life.
- Diamond: usually the biggest line on a solitaire. Protect cut before chasing vanity carat.
- Mount: enough metal and claw engineering for daily wear. Skimping here creates repair cycles.
- Buffer: size confirmation, possible resize, travel.
Lab-grown vs natural moves the diamond line hard — preference and budget tool, not a moral score. Ceiling tight and presence matters? Lab-grown is often the rational path. Natural non-negotiable? Shrink carat or simplify the mount before you starve cut.
Settings and lifestyle
A setting is engineering dressed as jewellery. Solitaires show the stone clean and clean easily. Halos add face-up width and more claws to maintain. Side stones need matched craft so shoulders do not outshine a weak centre. Vintage galleries look intricate in photos and catch on knits — try before you commit if you live in jumpers.
Match claw height to your week. Gym, climbing, healthcare gloves, workshop jobs punish tall claws. Low profiles are not “less romantic.” They are how diamonds stay in the ring. Ask how the head is built — not only how it photographs.
Proposal timelines that actually work
Four weeks out, size known: start in ready to ship. Nothing fits? Ask if a fast MTO is realistic. Do not assume.
Eight to twelve weeks: shop MTO calmly, confirm size, leave buffer for hallmarking and delivery. Lock the certificate checklist early — do not redesign in week eleven.
Surprise, size unknown: borrow a ring from the correct finger, have it measured, or plan a temporary band with a clear resize path. Do not invent a size from a coffee-cup photo.
Ready to pay when you can say this
One paragraph: shape, approximate carat, colour/clarity window, metal, size, lab report identity when certified, lead time, return rules. Cannot say it? You are browsing. Fine. Paying is a different act.

Aftercare belongs in the buy
Budget claw checks. Diamonds do not unscrew politely. Clean lotion and London air off the stone so the cut you paid for stays visible. Keep the certificate PDF with the purchase email. Travelling with the ring? Check whether your insurer wants a separate valuation — that is not the grading report.
Manufacturing defects in normal use: 1-year manufacturing warranty. Accidental damage, untreated bent claws, “I dislike the shape now” — different conversations. Read policies before you need them.
Remount later? Take the original report and any inscription notes. Adding a wedding band? Bring the engagement ring so stack height, metal colour, and claw clearance are matched on purpose.
